Feix&Merlin win the international Bathing Beauties competition to
'Re-imagine the beach hut for the 21st century'!
Feix&Merlin have been selected as one of four winners of the international
Bathing Beauties competition to 'Re-imagine the beach hut for the 21st
century'. The competition was devised by artist Michael Trainor with the
aim of producing a linear gallery of dramatic new seaside architecture
for a 10mile stretch of Lincolnshire coast between Mablethorpe and Chapel
St. Leonards, UK. This highly innovative approach to coastal regeneration
is part of a wider environmental improvement scheme lead by Lincolnshire
County Council with East Lindsey District Council and local parish councils.
Feix&Merlin hope to be on site this summer with a target completion
date for September 2007.
Over 240 scale models were entered by artists and architects from 15
countries with ideas ranging from whimsical follies to creative exercises
in space, light and line, the Bathing Beauties competition has elicited
one of the most exciting responses to any architectural competition this
century. The competition was judged by a panel of experts and all entrants
details were kept anonymous until the winning designs had been selected.
The four winners who are each offered a commission of £20,000 pounds
sterling to build their hut in 2007 are:
Atelier NU, Montreal, Canada for 'Halcyon Beach Hut'.
Feix&Merlin, London, for 'Eyes Wide sHut'.

Feix&Merlin shortlisted on the Deal Pier Cafe Bar Competition!
Feix&Merlin have been shortlisted along with three other practices
in the competition to renovate the Café-bar facility at the end
of Deal Pier, Kent. The project forms part of an on-going series of improvement
works being carried out by Dover District Council, whose completion is
scheduled to coincide with the Pier’s Golden Jubilee celebrations
in 2007.
Dover District Council received eighty-two (82) Expressions of Interest
from architectural practices across the UK, France, Germany and the Netherlands
- four of which were invited to proceed to design.
The Jury Panel consisted of representatives from Deal Town Council, the
Deal Historical Society and Dover District Council, together with an Adviser
from the RIBA (Robert Sakula, Ash Sakula Architects). The panel selected
teams which they felt would be most capable of producing a successful
resolution to the project, with a high quality, innovative, striking design
that will attract interest from the sea front and encourage visitors onto
the Pier.
The four practices (in alphabetical order) invited to proceed to the
design phase of the competition were as follows: -
Block Architecture
Feix&Merlin
